An event on juvenile justice was held at the Leadership School

In the initiative
of the Commissioner for Human Rights of the Republic of Azerbaijan Elmira
Suleymanova next event was held at the Leadership School of the Azerbaijan Child
and the Youth Network. The event devoted to "Juvenile justice-fair trial of
juveniles” was attended by the staff members of the Ombudsman Office, head of
Child Rights Clinic, children and parents. The representative of the
Commissioner Ravan Samadov noted creation of perfect juvenile justice system
meeting the requirements of international standards is one of the priorities of
the country. He noted the Commissioner pays close attention to protection of
the rights of juvenile inmates along with other rights and attaches great
importance to juvenile justice issues. It was noted the Commissioner also made a
number of proposals in this respect. The Commissioner considers that actions not
related to (other than) deprivation of liberty should be used instead of
imprisonment. Besides, she made proposals on formation of mediation institute
that can contribute to using alternative methods of punishment and to decrease
of the number of unnecessary imprisonment, and inmates, as well as on
organization public discussions on draft law on juvenile justice. Head of
Child Rights Clinic Nazir Gouliyev noted close cooperation was built with the
Ombudsman Institute in the field of realization of child rights, as well as of
juvenile justice. Later on short film entitled "Key” was shown and the
participants had discussion on the film.
