and the United Kingdom
The European Court of Human Rights has today notified in writing the
following 13 judgments, none of which are final.
Natig Mirzayev v. Azerbaijan (application no. 36122/06)
The applicant, Natig Farhad Oglu Mirzayev, is a stateless person who
was born in 1971 and is currently serving a life sentence in Gobustan
Prison (located outside Baku in Azerbaijan) for murder and theft, among
other offences. Relying on Article 3 (prohibition of inhuman and
degrading treatment) of the European Convention on Human Rights, he
complained about the harsh conditons of his detention, which resulted
in him contracting tuberculosis, and the ensuing lack of adequate
medical care. He also complained, under Article 6 (right to a fair
trial), about the unfairness of the proceedings he had brought against
the prison authorities seeking compensation for the alleged inadequate
medical care as the hearings on his case had been held in his absence.
